Lightning Strike Kills Pupil, Injures a Teacher, Three Others KUALA KANGSAR, 1 FEBRUARY, 2012: A pupil was killed while four others including a teacher were hurt in a lightning strike at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Mazuin school field here, yesterday. The victim, Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Tajul Ariffin, 11, and his three schoolmates, Muhammad Izhar Iskandar Jamaluddin, 10, Anwar Azllin, 12, and Nor Arifah Fatimah, 12, and archery teacher Azizul Rahman Ismail, 31, had just completed their archery training when the lightning struck at 5.30pm. Kuala Kangsar OCPD Supt Abdul Ghaffar Mohamad said Muhammad Syafiq died on the spot. The others were rushed to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital for treatment. "Muhammad Syafiq died from serious injuries all over the body. The rest are in a stable condition," he said when contacted today. There was a drizzle shortly after the training before it started raining heavily, forcing the students to take refuge under a shed at the edge of the field before the lightning struck. Meanwhile, Azizul Rahman, who taught Mathematics, said he was packing his gears under the shed and was planning to brief his eight charges on preparations for an archery tournament later this month when the incident occurred. "I fainted and when I regained my consciousness, I realised that I was lying at the edge of the field. My legs became cramped and numbed. "I cried and asked the medical team to treat the pupils first. I feel guilty about the incident," he told reporters at the Kuala Kangsar Hospital here today. Besides the archery team, the school's footballers were also undergoing training at the field yesterday afternoon. Muhammad Shafiq's father, Mohd Tajul Arifin Shahruddin, 40, said normally the pupils were allowed to go home early by their archery teacher if there was a downpour. "I waited for my son, but he did not return home. I used to go to the school to watch him training, but not yesterday," he said when met at his house in Kampung Kuala Dal here. Muhammad Shafiq was buried at the Kampung Kuala Dal Muslim Cemetery here at 11.30am. Meanwhile, Muhammad Izhar, who scalded his left ankle, said the incident had dampened his spirit to continue participating in archery and he wanted to switch to chess. "It was drizzling as we were about to go home after the archery training. But when it started raining heavily, we took a shelter under a shed at the edge of the field before the lightning struck," he said when met at his house in Kampung Pakri here. Headmaster Mohd Jamaai Ahmad said he had sent a report on the incident to the district education office and the students affected and their families would be given a counselling to restore their confidence. - Bernama

WORKER LOOKS FOR COMPENSATION AFTER LIGHTNING STRIKE By Andrew Duffy on 24 January 20120 comments A Bunbury man is fighting for workers compensation after claiming he was struck by lightning while working for mining contractor NRW Holdings. Matthew Kahn said he was working as a traffic controller during a storm on the $500 million Mid West Rail venture in WA when he was struck by lightning. He told The West Australian the incident left him temporarily blinded, paralysed him, and left him shaking uncontrollably for two days. It was pelting down and lightning was going off and all of a sudden I got thrown up in the air and then flat on my back, he said. According to The West Australian a medical report said he had neuropsychological sequelae from being very close to a lightning strike. The Mid-West Rail project is a joint venture between Brookfield Multiplex Engineering, NRW, and Laing ORourke. The development is designed to link mining projects in the mid-west and Yilgarn regions to the WA coast. NRW secretary Kim Hyman told The West Australian the company denied forcing workers to work through extreme weather. You can take it as gospel, no one takes any chances with the weather, he said. Worksafe said it had contacted Kahn and was investigating the issue.

Farmer struck by lightning but recovering Updated January 03, 2012 14:07:26 Map Data - Terms of Use Map MAP: Nyabing 6341 A farmer in Western Australia's Great Southern region is recovering at home after surviving being struck by lightning. The 33-year-old Nyabing farmer, who does not want to be named, says he was working in a paddock when he was hit on Friday night. He was flown to Royal Perth Hospital for observation overnight and allowed to return home the next day. He says he felt shaken but was otherwise unharmed by the lightning. "Apparently it threw me through the air a bit, and it went into my right hand side of my body, like under my chest, and came out my right leg," he said. "So I'm just a little bit sore, probably more so from getting thrown on the ground than anything else." He says he remembers feeling intense pain. "I didn't really get knocked out, I don't think, but obviously I was left on the ground and, to a degree, paralysed on the right hand side of my body. "I was all cramped up from the electricity."

Largest Tesla Coils Ever Will Recreate Natural Lightning By Joshua Philipp Epoch Times StaffCreated: November 28, 2011Last Updated: November 29, 2011 Related articles: Technology » Innovation Downscaled prototypes of the Lightning Foundry Tesla coils blast electricity between each other. (Courtesy of Greg Leyh) Sometimes, all it takes to push the boundaries of science is a wacky idea and a machine to prove it. Greg Leyh, founder of Lightning On Demand (LOD), may do just that, with plans to build two, 10-story-tall Tesla coils that can shoot hundreds of feet of lightning. Historically, new scientific machines produce unexpected discoveries, said Leyh in an e-mail interview. Many new discoveries are viewed as problems, where others provide fascinating new insights. Leyh hopes the Lightning Foundry project will shine new light on the initiation process of natural lightning, which he explains on the LOD website. The problem with studying lightning, it states, is that as lightning forms, it uses tricks science does not yet understand to break through the air up to 10 times easier than what can be done with small-scale electric arcs. But theories, and an experimental accident of the Siberian Institute for Power Engineering, found laboratory-scale electric arcs start to gain lightning-like abilities once they grow past about 200ft in length, according to the website. Thus, the team at LOD aims to build two Tesla coils at the scale needed to generate electric arcs large enough to mimic natural lightning. A Tesla coil ignites a nearby ladder. (Courtesy of Greg Leyh) These will be the largest Tesla coils ever built, and will run at full outputaround 4 million wattsto fill a football field with continuous bolts of lightning. They then plan to increase the voltage to 14 million volts and change the distance between the towers to explore this mysterious region where normal electric arcs transform into lightning, according to the project website. Understanding how lightning forms [and grows] is the first step towards being able to control where lightning strikes or being able to suppress it completely in certain areas, Leyh said. In 2008 they built a 1:12 scale model of the Lightning Foundry project, and as the project website states, The prototype twin coils often surprise us with wonderfully unexpected behavior, including a strong tendency to couple power wirelessly over large distances. While testing the prototype coils, we accidentally discovered that they can transmit wireless power very effectively& enough to start a fire, Leyh said. They published a paper on the discovery at the 2008 North American Power Symposium. The prototype twin coils often surprise us with wonderfully unexpected behavior, including a strong tendency to couple power wirelessly over large distances. Greg Leyh, Lightning On Demand founder But they found the wireless power could do other things, and the LOD team used it to create the worlds first wirelessly powered vehicle using the electric field from the coils. The vehicle, which they called the Tesla Roadster is a chair on wheels with a large pole that can pull power from the field of the Tesla coils. LOD has created similar projects. They built the first big coil in 1990, followed by the largest Tesla coil in the world, the 38-foot-tall, 130,000-watt Electrum in 1997. Aside from fire safety, the team will be taking other Tesla coil-related issues into consideration. Tesla coils have an uncanny ability to short out modern electronicsanything from erasing voice mails to blowing out computer screens. To guard against this, the LOD teams usually places nearby electronics in shielded enclosures, or they run the coils far, far away, Leyh said. Related Articles Sprites in Space: Lightning Teaches Us About Other Planets The project is currently being funded on Kickstarter. Leyh also notes anyone interested in recreating lightning can visit the LOD website to find out how they can take part in this project.

They are some of the 15 children admitt By Ismael Kasooha in Kibaale HAD the parents of Kyenzige Model Primary School in Kibaale district been able to raise the required sh1.5m to install lightning conductors, yesterdays tragedy in which 40 pupils were struck by lightning would have been averted. Fifteen children were critically injured in the thunder bolt that hit the school during a midday drizzle. Karubanga the headteacher said the school does not have lightning conductors and attributed the tragedy to that. He however, said the school management and parents had started contributing money to install the conductors. We had collected over sh550,000 from parents to buy the conductors but we could not get them because they are estimated to cost sh1.5m, Karubanga said. He said they had just told the pupils to stop playing in the rain when they heard a loud bang. We saw the pupils fall to the ground and others running away in fear, he said. Good Samaritans rushed the injured to Kagadi hospital. Dinah Twinomujuni, the clinical officer at the out-patients department at Kagadi hospital, said they were overwhelmed by the big number of the victims and were forced to suspend activities in other wards so as to attend to the pupils. The pupils were vomiting, had paralysed legs and hands and complained of chest pain, headache and stomachache for those who could talk. Twinomujuni added that 15 had been admitted while the remaining 25 were treated and discharged. She asked school administrations to install lightning conductors to avoid such tragedies. Some of the pupils admitted include Eviline Kusemererwa, 14, Rosemary Tuhaise, 13, John Kiiza, 14, Resty Kyalikunda, 15, Margaret Musimenta, 15, Joseph Kiiza, 15, Francis Tumwesige, 14, and Rosemary Atugonza, 11. When New Vision visited the wards the children were admitted in, it was discovered that some were lying on the floor and others were sharing beds. One of the pupils, Oliver Nankya, said they had just completed their science test and were standing on the verandah when the lightning struck. The deputy head teacher said most pupils were barefoot but even those who had sandals were not spared. Kyenzige Model Primary School has a population of 565 pupils.

Mr Eng survived but his friend died. -- PHOTO: LIANHE WANBAO By Khushwant Singh Two dispatch riders decided to spend their day off on a Saturday last year to fish on Coney Island. When it started raining at 2pm, they sought shelter under a tree 20m from the shoreline. A little while later, one of the two felt a sharp pain and lost consciousness. When he came round, he was unable to move his body and had difficulty breathing. The other angler, Mr Tan Guan Yin, 40, was lying motionless nearby and was unresponsive to attempts to rouse him. Background story Precautions to take during a thunderstorm If you are in the open: Do not stay on high ground. Seek shelter in a building or vehicle. If that is not possible, seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a thick growth of small trees and crouch into a ball on the ground. Do not ride on a bicycle, motorcycle or golf cart. Spread out if you are in a group. Avoid holding metal objects and standing under tall trees or standing near metal fences, pipes and rails. Avoid using the telephone, electrical appliances and electronic equipment. Head for shore if you are in open water. If you are at home: Avoid taking a shower or bath, as plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity; Avoid using a corded telephone unless it is an emergency; cordless and cellphones are safe to use. Unplug electrical appliances, including air conditioners. Power surges caused by lightning can damage these items. Source: www.scdf.gov.sg His friend Eng Yang Huat, 41, used his cellphone to call a fellow angler for help at 5pm. The friend drove down and managed to find him, before seeking help from the Lorong Halus Power Station Depot. However, witnesses saw the fisherman fall into the water after lightning struck the area near where he was fishing, said Manny Duenas, president of the Guam Fisherman's Co-op, which runs a fish store in the area. At the time of the strike, the fisherman was casting a fishing rod off the reef flat to the north of Paseo De Susana. If the man was standing on the reef, his feet would have been in the water, Duenas said. Yesterday afternoon, a small pack of surfers braved the shallows near the breakwater, close to where the fisherman died. The skies overhead were blue and clear. One of those surfers was Jon Iriarte, 49, who said he had fled from lightning storms in that area before. One time, about a year or two ago, a group of surfers escaped the water and hid under a pavilion when a storm approached, Iriarte said. A lightning strike hit a pole at a nearby softball field, and the group felt a sharp tingle. That was "close enough," he said. "Whenever a black cloud approaches, even if we don't know there is lightning in it, we come in," Iriarte said. "That is the rule of thumb. ... Most of the time it's not a lightning storm, but we don't take the chance." The thunderstorm that blanketed Guam on Friday was a powerful one -- and it hung around. Genny Miller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the thunderstorm on Friday started before noon and dragged on into the afternoon. There was no wind to push it away, so the storm hovered, she said. "It was just was not moving away from the area," Miller said. "There was not much of a breeze to push it off of the island. So, when we have those light wind days, if a thunderstorm happens to develop over us it just pours." Heavy rains are not uncommon this time of year, but fatal lightning strikes are still rare. According to Pacific Daily News files, the last time a person on Guam was killed by a lightning strike was 2003, when a tourist was killed while swimming in Tumon. A fisherman who was killed by a lightning strike last week was found facing the shoreline, floating in shallow water, as if trying to escape the danger in his final moments. Microscopic testing confirmed yesterday that Edward Cruz San Nicolas, 59, was killed by lightning, not drowning, as was initially expected. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola confirmed the cause of death yesterday. San Nicolas was electrocuted Friday afternoon, while fishing off of the reef near Paseo De Susana in Hagåtña. San Nicolas and his common-law wife of 14 years, Mary Workman, went fishing together almost every day, and Friday was no different. "We both went out to the water and we were fishing, and then here comes the rain," Workman said yesterday. "So I was soaking wet and he told me to go back because he didn't want me to get sick. I said 'are you going to follow me?' and he said: 'Go ahead, I'll be in at 3 p.m.'" Time passed and Workman waited, but 3 p.m. came and went without her husband's return. While she sat in their truck to hide from the rain, a loud bolt of lightning struck nearby, startling her. Eventually, Workman went to search for San Nicolas. "And then I found him face down on the rocks," she said. And that's when I started yelling for help." By the time Guam Fire Department medics arrived on the scene, San Nicolas had been pulled out of the water. He was taken to U.S. Naval Hospital Guam where he was pronounced dead. Authorities initially believed he drowned, but an autopsy conducted Monday proved that wasn't the case. Espinola suspected electrocution but wasn't able to confirm this cause of death until testing was completed yesterday.

New lab zaps aircraft with lightning bolts Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory lighting up new composite materials in airliners By Layer 8 on Fri, 10/14/11 - 1:05pm. Email Add a comment Print A new laboratory has opened that will study the impact of lightning strikes on airplanes, particularly new aircraft that are made up of carbon composite materials. The $2.5 million Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory at Cardiff University in the UK says its facilities will generate up to 200,000 Amps. "To put this in context, an average lightning strike has 32,000 Amps and the maximum amount of electricity powering a house is about 100 Amps," the University stated. The lab, which will be largely funded by the EADs aerospace firm and the Welsh government, will be used by manufacturers of composites, lightning conductors and aircraft manufacturers, including the new carbon composite technology finding its way into aircraft and spacecraft development. In other news: 20 of the weirdest, wackiest and stupidest sci/tech stories of 2011 (so far!) Lightning strikes happen on average every second around the Earth and they hit many aircraft about once a year so learning more about its impact on flying structures is important, said Professor Manu Haddad of the Cardiff School of Engineering. "This new facility will allow Cardiff University to work closely with manufacturers and users of composite materials and components to optimize the electrical properties of the material and structure designs, and, ultimately, the research aims to contribute to the development of more environmentally-friendly and safer aircraft". According to a BBC report the lab has "complex systems that ensure the safety of researchers, with the control area separated securely from the live equipment. Switches are operated by compressed air and fiber optics are used to carry signals from instruments so no cables or other conductors run between the two sections. The experiments themselves are carried out within a double steel-lined cage which also provides an acoustic shield for the loud blast when the lightning bolts are fired." As we mentioned, it is not uncommon for airliners to be hit by lightning. According to Lightning Technologies, a lighting mitigation company, aircraft often trigger lightning when flying through a heavily charged region of a cloud. In these instances, the lightning flash originates at the airplane and extends away in opposite directions. Although record keeping is poor, smaller business and private airplanes are thought to be struck less frequently because they usually do not adhere to rigid schedules. "The last confirmed civilian plane crash that was directly attributed to lightning in the U.S. was in 1967, when lightning caused a catastrophic fuel tank explosion. Since then, much has been learned about how lightning can affect airplanes, and protection techniques have improved. Airplanes receive a rigorous set of lightning certification tests to verify the safety of their designs. Modern passenger jets have miles of wires and dozens of computers and other instruments that control everything from the engines to the passengers' music headsets. These computers, like all computers, are sometimes susceptible to upset from power surges. So, in addition to the design of the exterior of the aircraft, the lightning protection engineer must assure that no damaging surges or transients can be induced into the sensitive equipment inside of the aircraft," the company states.

Logan Williams' life and that of his mother and father have taken a horrible turn. The boy from the Shamokin area is in Geisinger Medical Center in critical condition. "He's wonderful. He's smart, intelligent. He loves to ride his four wheeler. He plays in the yard all the time. He's just a super great kid, very loving, very happy little boy," said family friend Shari Merlino. According to witnesses, Logan had just gotten off the bus Wednesday afternoon. It was raining heavily and he ran toward his house. He sped between two trees heading to his house near Shamokin when a bolt of lightening hit one of the trees. The burst of energy knocked Logan unconscious. "We heard this terrible crash and I looked up to Danny, which is his daddy, and I said, 'Boy that had to hit. That was something loud' and at that time Michelle looked out to see him come down the yard and she always watches him walk down and she saw him laying out there," Merlino added. Neighbor Bob Swank said the storm was vicious. "It was very close. It's frightening too," Swank said. Everyone who knows Logan hopes he makes a full recovery "Just send prayers out to the family at this time. They are a very, very close family all of them. It's very hard on them right now," said Merlino.

(AP) ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. Lightning struck three workers who were finishing concrete at an Atlantic City casino project in one of the state's tallest buildings on Thursday, killing one and injuring the others. The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. during a brief but intense storm that filled the air with lightning and torrential rain. The worker who died had been "in bad shape" when rescuers reached him, fire Chief Dennis Brooks told The Associated Press. The rescuers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation while taking him down from an upper floor of the unfinished Revel casino project, Brooks said. "They were up there pouring concrete when the bucket lift they were using got hit by lightning," Brooks said. "One guy got a glancing hit, and he sustained a minor injury. Another guy got the full brunt of it. We did CPR all the way down to him and on the way to the hospital." Officials with Revel Entertainment LLC confirmed the worker's death in a statement Thursday, adding it extended its "deepest condolences to the injured men and their families." The third injured worker declined medical treatment at the scene, the company said. Atlantic City's emergency management coordinator, Tom Foley, said the men were working on the seventh floor of the 48-story project when the lightning struck. "It was a severe thunderstorm," Foley said. Electrician Kevin Malinowski, who was working on the project, said he and other workers were shaken by the accident in the nation's second-biggest gambling market after Las Vegas. "It's a shame what happened," said Malinowski, from Turnersville. "This is part of the job." The ocean-themed casino will have 1,100 hotel rooms and employ about 5,500 people when it opens May 15. It is 710 feet tall, making it the second-tallest building in the state after the Goldman Sachs building in Jersey City. The lightning strike was only the latest tragedy to befall the $2.4 billion project. In July 2008, a plane carrying three executives to a meeting with a glass manufacturer crashed in bad weather at a small airport in Minnesota, killing all eight people on board. By January 2009, the project was virtually out of money. It laid off 400 workers and halted construction on everything but the exterior until new funding was lined up earlier this year. Even the wind has targeted Revel, toppling a construction crane off its roof. And when welders were dismantling what was left of the crane, part of the building caught fire, but it was quickly extinguished. Foley said Thursday's lightning strike did not cause structural damage to the building. Revel will be the city's 12th casino and probably the last mega-project built in Atlantic City for some time because of competition and concerns about the economy. ___ Wayne Parry can be reached at http://twitter.com/WayneParryAC

RyanLightning Strike Injures Three Calif. Firefighters BY JOHN SCHEIBE - Ventura County Star, Calif. Posted: Wed, 09/14/2011 - 11:53am Updated: Wed, 09/14/2011 - 11:56am Three Los Padres National Forest firefighters were sent to hospitals Tuesday afternoon after lightning hit within 50 feet of where they were standing in the mountains around Lockwood Valley, Ventura County Fire Department officials said. "It knocked them off their feet," said Andrew Madsen, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service. The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. near the 2600 block of Lockwood Valley Road. It came as a series of thunderstorms moved through the area, said Bill Nash, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department. Madsen said the three reported ringing in their ears and disorientation. "We're lucky, in that it could have been much worse," Madsen said. The firefighters were in the Frazier Mountain area fighting a series of fires sparked by lightning, Madsen said. The fires have been going since Saturday. Two of the firefighters were taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, while a third was taken to a hospital in Bakersfield, Madsen said. None of them lost consciousness and all were expected to survive, Madsen said. One firefighter was held overnight at a hospital for observation and the other two were released, according to a National Weather Service statement. Forest Service officials did not release their names Tuesday, saying family members would have to be contacted first. They were expected to release the names today. The three work for the Forest Service. The National Weather Service in Oxnard had issued a severe weather alert for the northern part of Ventura and Los Angeles counties this afternoon. The storms came as a low-pressure system over the county moved south, allowing thunderstorms to move in from the north, said Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service office in Oxnard. Winds of 60 mph or more were possible, Kaplan said. A flash-flood warning also was in effect for Los Angeles County, Kaplan said. The National Weather Service said rainfall rates of 2 inches per hour were recorded in some areas of the warning, and residents are warned to avoid streams and areas of runoff. Joshua Tree National Park spokesman Joe Zarki says torrential rains caused widespread flash flooding in the Pinto Basin and Cottonwood Spring areas of the park. Lightning strikes also set palm trees ablaze in Southern California desert areas near Palm Springs early Tuesday as thunderstorms quickly rolled across the region. About 10 trees reportedly caught fire in the middle of the Indian Canyons golf course. Three more burned at the Seven Lakes Country Club. Heavy rains helped firefighters douse those fires before they could spread. The Associated Press contributed to this report. McClatchy-Tribune News Service

The water park, located at 10001 N McKinley Drive near Busch Gardens, monitors inclement weather with real-time radar, lightning detection and a park manager whose responsibilities include physical monitoring of weather conditions, a spokeswoman said Saturday. It is unclear if the Key West Rapids water slide was closing when the 21-year-old man, a life guard supervisor, was struck. The monitoring system has been in place since the park's opening in 1980. "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our employees and guests," said Jim Dean, park president for Busch Gardens and Adventure Island. "This is the first incident of its kind at the park." The life guard supervisor, who has not been identified, was reported to be standing in about 2 to 3 feet of water when the lightning struck at about 11:45 a.m., according to Tampa Fire Rescue. Key West Rapids, a six story, 700-foot slide has entry pools at the top and bottom where employees help guests on and off the ride. The entry pool at the top is 1.5-feet deep. It was unclear Saturday which entrance the life guard supervisor manned. After the incident, the water park's employees removed the unconscious man from the water and began performing CPR. Fire units arrived at the park within four minutes. Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts as they transported the man to University Community Hospital, Fire Rescue said. He was later pronounced dead. A storm was moving through the area and out into Tampa Bay during the strike, according to the National Weather Service. "There were several isolated lightning strikes in that area at that time," said Jennifer McNatt, a meteorologist with the weather service. The front dissipated, and others rolled in behind it, she said. Dean, the park's president, said the tower at the water slide may have taken the lightning strike. "Being near tall objects during a lightning strike is dangerous because lightning is attracted to tall objects," McNatt explained. "On top of a water slide is definitely a dangerous place to be when it's lightning." The Key West Rapids slide closed after the incident, but the park remained open for business, park spokeswoman Jill Revelle said. Park officials have not decided if the slide will reopen today. Saturday afternoon, they offered condolences to the park worker's family. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of our employee and will do everything possible to assist them at this difficult time," Dean said. By STEPHEN THOMPSON | The Tampa Tribune Published: September 11, 2011 » 1 Comment | Post a Comment TAMPA -- On Friday, as he celebrated his 21st birthday, Justin Savers Inversso told some young people he had just met that it was necessary to get right with God because "you never know when a life-threatening situation will come up," his father said. One came up for the devout young Christian on Saturday. As a storm threatened over Adventure Island just before noon, Inversso, who worked as a lifeguard supervisor at the park, was trying to get everyone on the 700-foot-tall Key West Rapids ride to safety when lightning struck the tower, according to family members and park and fire officials. At the time, Inversso was standing in 2 or 3 feet of water in all likelihood, family members said, at one of the turns where tube riders sometimes get stuck and need an extra shove. Park employees got him out of the water and began CPR after the 11:49 a.m. lightning strike. Four minutes later, Tampa Fire Rescue workers arrived and continued the effort. Inversso was taken to University Community Hospital, where he died. "It's a victory for him, in the sense he got to go to heaven as a birthday gift," said his father, Frank Inversso, 47, a sergeant with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. Justin Inversso grew up in Dade City and attended Pasco County High School, where he was captain of the swim team and an honors student. He attended Hillsborough Community College for two years, and this year began studying engineering at the University of South Florida. Busch Gardens, which is affiliated with Adventure Island, was contemplating paying for the remainder of his education and taking him on in an engineering capacity when he graduated, his father said. But perhaps more significant than his secular life, Justin Inversso was a member of the Church of Christ, a nondenominational church in Zephyrhills where he taught Sunday school to teenagers and sometimes gave sermons, his father said. Inversso's work as a lifeguard at the water park dovetailed with his work for the Lord, Frank Inversso said. "The young man is about preserving lives and preserving souls," he said. "If there's such a place as heaven, he's definitely welcome." Frank Inversso knows what his son said while he celebrated his birthday with his friends and with his friends' friends because they came to the emergency room at the hospital Saturday, and told the elder Inversso. Adventure Island remained open Saturday, but the Key West Rapids ride was closed. In addition to his father, Inversso is survived by his mother, Julie, 42; his sister, Kara, 18; and his brother, Dominick, 13.
